The Tiger swimmers continued their dominance this season, defeating Aloha decisively Thursday at the Aloha Swim Center. The official score posted for the boys was Tigers 114, Warriors 37. The girls score had the Tigers over the Warriors 113-47. However, the scoring appeared to be inaccurate after an examination of the score sheets. The official scorers awarded Aloha’s Alexa Mull first-place in the 50 freestyle with a swim of 28:40. However, the official scorecard listed Newberg’s Alexis Vargas’ time as 28:34, 0.06 faster than Mull’s finish. But the scorers awarded Aloha the first-place victory incorrectly, said Newberg head coach Rich Tobergte.
Newberg’s relay teams won every event. The girls 200 medley relay team of Alysha Bush, Hannah Miller, Meghan O’Halloran and Cassie Beecher outdistanced by 11 seconds Newberg’s second-place team of Kindra Fish, Tina Thatch, Vargas and Savanna Youngquist. The Tigers also won the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Vargas, Fish, Peterson and Molly Calcagno took first-place in the event. The team of Beecher, O’Halloran, Miller and Bush also won the 400 freestyle relay.Cassie Beecher finished first in the 200 freestyle and Hannah Miller took second. The Tigers swept the top three places in the 200 individual medleys with a first-place finish by Bush, a second-place finish by O’Halloran and Danielle Austin in third. The Tigers also swept the 100 butterfly with Miller finishing first, Fish second and Thatch in third-place.O’Halloran and Vargas took first and second in the 100 freestyle and Austin won first-place in the 500 freestyle. Beecher won the 100 backstroke for the girl’s team with Fish finishing second. Bush won the 100 breaststroke with Thatch second and Calcagno placed third. Tobergte said the swim team “looked really good” and had a great match despite missing some key swimmers due to illness. He said the 2009/2010 team was deep and he expected great performances from them.
