PORTLAND — With a young and inexperienced team, Newberg got a nice boost of confidence after breezing to a 5-0 record and capturing the team title at the Parkrose Tournament over the weekend.
“It gave the girls a chance to have a lot of pressure to work on some things that they needed to work on,” head coach Jim McMaster said. “I saw some improvement on things they needed to work on throughout the tournament, so I was pleased with that.”
Cassie Beecher scored a total of 11 goals in two games and Alysha Bush added six as the Tigers defeated Gresham 14-1 and Reynolds 11-3 on Friday.
Beecher and Bush scored five goals apiece and also combined for five assists in a 12-3 win over Bend on Saturday, followed by a 7-2 win over Southridge that saw goalie Meghan O’Halloran block 13 shots.
The senior followed up that performance with an 11-block effort and handed out two assists in the 10-3 victory over Beaverton in the championship game.
Beecher and Bush again powered the offense, pouring in four goals apiece.
“It was team offense and structure, as well as working on passing under pressure and other things they’ve had problems with,” McMaster said. “And they saw things they weren’t able to see before, so I thought it was a really good experience for them. And it was good to win all their games.”
For the tournament, Beecher scored 23 goals with five assists. Bush finished with 18 scores and 11 helpers.
The Tigers turned around for an 18-6 win over Lakeridge Monday at the Chehalem Aquatic Center, with Bush scoring a game-high seven goals to go along with three assists.
Beecher scored twice and handed out five assists. Kylie Dunn added two goals and Clara Pugsley and O’Halloran each scored once.
“Every game, every tournament they’re getting better because they’re seeing things they hadn’t seen before,” McMaster said. “I think that brings confidence. Even on (Monday), I saw things growing instead of staying stagnant. That comes with time and I think they are using their time wisely.”
Newberg now heads to Tigard today (Wednesday) for a 4 p.m. contest.
