  Tigers ready for California trip
Newberg tuned up for this weekend’s Modesto Invitational in California with a 17-9 victory over Hillsboro Wednesday at the Chehalem Aquatic Center.
After the Tigers jumped to an 8-0 lead at halftime, the Spartans played their way back into the game against Newberg’s reserves.
Hillsboro brought the score to 9-6 after three quarters, but the Tigers starters returned to put the game out of reach with eight scores in the fourth.
Alysha Bush scored five goals and Cassie Beecher added four to lead Newberg’s offense. Clara Pugsley and Alexis Vargas also scored two goals apiece and Rebekah Carey, Elizabeth Kaufman and Mekala Gassner each added one.
Goalie Meghan O’Halloran blocked three shots for Newberg, which will be one of the more inexperienced teams at the California tournament, where the Tigers go each year to prepare for the Oregon state championships.
“They’re second in league this year, so they’re going to have to knock off a couple of teams to (get) a state championship,” head coach Jim McMaster said. “It should be a good experience for them.”
After returning from Modesto, Newberg will travel to play games at Forest Grove at Lakeridge on Monday and Wednesday, respectively.
